Explore: Oakwood Lake Park in Oxford Township
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Aug. 10, 2024)
Oxford, MI – Up in northern Oakland County is Oakwood Lake Township Park, a 300 acre park with a small trail system and a disc golf course.
I made two visits to this quiet, beautiful place. and found trails lined with trees, wildflowers and other vegetation. The Flint River runs through the park. There’s also a fishing pier at Rossman Lake, and a few logs left of a 1920’s log cabin.
The main trail is well worn, but there are two smaller trails that are thin and more difficult to access due to the thickness of the plants and the mud in the lower-lying areas. They also are not marked, and there is no map on site, so be sure to snag a screenshot from the Township’s website before you head out.
Among the creatures I saw on my journey was a woodcock, which is a silly looking bird with a wobbly looking body, a long beak, and big adorable eyes that live in wooded areas along rivers. They summer in Michigan before heading south in the wintertime. In addition to it’s unique appearance, woodcocks have huge wings and a penchant for silly movements. This one did some dancing in the trail before ducking into a quiet space between trees to hide.
I also got to see a garter snake.
The park was purchased with Michigan DNR grant funding so it remains a natural space for all to enjoy.
