Aug 14 – Road Commission Hosting Meeting About Commerce Road Culvert Replacement
West Bloomfield, MI -The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with West Bloomfield Township, will host a public information meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 14, about 2025 plans to replace a 90-year-old culvert under Commerce Road, just west of Green Lake Road in the township.
The culvert carries Commerce Road over a tributary that connects Green Lake, on the north side of Commerce Road, with South Lake on the south side of Commerce Road.
The meeting is from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Gretchko Elementary School, 5300 Greer Road, West Bloomfield Township. The meeting will be open-house format — there will not be a formal presentation. RCOC staff will be present to answer questions throughout the meeting.
The approximately $350,000 project is funded by RCOC.
The project includes:
- Replacing the current 43-foot-long culvert, with a 12-foot span and 8-foot height, with a 76-foot-long elliptical concrete pipe culvert with a 6.3-foot span and height of 4 feet.
- Maintaining existing water levels during and after construction.
- Placing stone (rip rap) at the culvert ends to prevent erosion.
- Burying the new culvert 8 inches to allow a natural stream bed throughout the structure.
- Paving over the vicinity of the new culvert with asphalt.
- Installing new guardrails, pavement markings and signage.
During construction, Commerce Road will be closed to through traffic between Hiller Road and Union Lake Road. Local residential and business traffic will be allowed within the closure, but the road will be completely closed at the culvert.
The detour route for through traffic is Commerce Road to Union Lake Road to Willow Road to Hiller Road, back to Commerce Road and vice versa.
