Public Input Wanted for Adams Road Options in Rochester Hills
(RCOC, July 25, 2024)
Rochester Hills, MI – The City of Rochester Hills, the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) and Oakland University (OU) are accepting comments on the five potential design alternatives for Adams Road between Hamlin Road and Walton Blvd., that have been identified through an ongoing study of the corridor.
The Adams Road Planning and Environmental Linkage (PEL) study is intended to identify the preferred future design of the section of Adams between Hamlin Road and Walton Blvd. The study is funded through a $2 million federal Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant.
In addition to the PEL study, it will include a subsequent Environmental Assessment (EA) of the corridor. An EA is a detailed, federally mandated study that looks at the impact of road improvements on a community.
RCOC and the City of Rochester Hills are splitting the required local match for the federal grant of $500,000 to complete the study.
The grant was awarded in 2020, and the study started in 2022. In all, five public workshops will be held, with a focus on alternatives for the corridor. Meetings have been conducted on September 20, 2022; May 9, 2023; and June 17, 2024.
The June 17 meeting took place at West Middle School in Rochester Hills. At the meeting, study leaders presented the five possible alternatives for the corridor that have been identified through the study:
- No build (maintain the corridor as a two-lane road)
- Reconstruct as a three-lane road with a continuous center left-turn lane
- Reconstruct as a three-lane road with continuous center left-turn lanes and roundabouts at major intersections
- Reconstruct as a five-lane road with two through lanes in each direction and a continuous center left-turn lane
- Reconstruct as a four-lane boulevard with a center median
The public is invited to provide comments on these five alternatives through Aug. 1. Comments can be made online at the study website’s engagement page. The website address is: https://mksk.mysocialpinpoint.com/visioningadamsroad/adams-road-pel-home.
Through the study, the public and stakeholders will shape the future for the corridor. The study website includes a link to an interactive map and an “ideas wall”. Project documents and information about the public workshops are also on the website.
