20-Year-OId Drowns in Rose Township’s Taylor Lake
(OCSO, July 21, 2024)
Rose Township, MI – A 20-year-old Detroit man drown Saturday morning while swimming in Taylor Lake in Rose Township.
The man, Marsalis Quintin Carter, who lists residences in Detroit and Tuskegee, Ala., jumped off the side of a pontoon boat into the private lake and did not resurface.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team was dispatched to the scene at 11:07 a.m.
“I encourage people to have a personal flotation device on if they are not strong swimmers when they get in the lake, as we have had numerous drownings this summer in similar situations,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “Even if you are a strong swimmer and have been drinking alcohol, it’s a good idea as well.”
The young man was part of a moving crew who was assisting a resident with a move. The crew asked to go on the boat with the owner to relax and cool off while on break. The boat’s owner took them to the lake for a swim. Carter and another man jumped into the water.
One man made it back to the boat and Carter did not. Strike teams from the Southeast Michigan Dive Group responded to assist the Sheriff’s Office and the North Oakland County Fire Authority in the search, including divers from Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston and Wayne counties.
At least 25 divers were on the scene. The search lasted more than 13 hours.
The Sheriff’s Office aviation and drone units also responded to the scene to assist in the search. Divers used various sonar equipment and searching techniques because of poor visibility in the lake.
The man located about 300 feet from the shore 35 feet of water about 12:30 a.m. today.
An autopsy was performed this morning at the office of the Oakland County Medical Examiner. The preliminary cause of death is drowning. Taylor Lake is located off Hickory Ridge Road in Rose Township.
