Berkley Residents Can Request a Free Tree Be Planted in Street Right of Way
(City of Berkley, July 20, 2024)
Berkley, MI- The City of Berkley is working to build the tree canopy of the city by inviting residents to apply for a free tree and planting in their street right of way. According to their website “DPW will investigate and determine an appropriate location and tree type for the public right of way.
“Underground utilities, existing tree roots, greenbelt size and diversity of trees in the area will dictate placement and type of tree to be planted. Please note there may be rare cases where a new tree cannot be planted at this time.
“There are so many reasons to plant a tree we could not possibly list all of them here. The appeal of Berkley’s neighborhoods in the real estate market is partly due to our tree-lined streets, and therefore adds to the resale value of your homes. Correctly planted trees can make your home substantially more comfortable, even without air conditioning.
“In addition, trees and shrubs trap rainwater allowing it to soak into the soil. On average, one street tree can keep more than 1000 gallons of rainwater from entering the sewer system each year.”
The program is first come first served, with those not getting a tree this year being put on a list for next year. Trees will be planted in late November or early December.
