July 16 – Design Open House for Pontiac Oaks County Park
Pontiac, MI – Join Oakland County Parks and City of Pontiac for an open house to learn more about the exciting future of Pontiac Oaks County Park!
Pontiac Oaks – formerly known as Hawthorne Park – is in the design phase for improvements funded by the Oakland County Parks Healthy Communities Park and Outdoor Recreation Investment Plan, with construction planned for 2025 and 2026. The anticipated investment of $2.215 million includes $1.3 million from the American Recovery Plan Act and $915,000 from Oakland County Parks’ capital improvement fund.
What we heard from you
The preliminary design for Pontiac Oaks has been developed with guidance from the public engagement conducted in 2023. The most important priorities identified by Pontiac residents were:
- Care of the forest, water and natural areas
- Maintaining a clean, safe park with working amenities
- Making sure everyone is welcome to gather, relax and play at the park
What has been done
Work started in 2023 to improve existing park facilities and reopen closed facilities. The following has been completed or is underway:
- Management of natural resources
- New larger fishing pier
- Expansion and renovation of playground
- Renovation of restrooms – opening soon
What to expect at your park
The schematic design and inspirational images below show the planned improvements based on the priorities identified by the community. The planned improvements include:
- Accessible pathways and connections to the natural world
- Nature-based play pockets and playful pathways
- New accessible gathering shelter
- Increased visibility and connection to Creger Lake
