OC Restaurant Quest: Sakura Sushi in South Lyon

South Lyon, MI – Sakura Sushi in South Lyon has a menu full of traditional Japanese favorites, and I loved being able to try a few of their items in this quest to feature every restaurant in Oakland County.
First was the Hibachi Steak, which came served Bento-style in a tray with spots for the veggies, rice, noodles, and sauteed meat. Steak can be ordered to your liking. For the fried rice you have the option to upgrade to chicken fried rice or shrimp fried rice. There are also other types of Hibachi – vegetable, chicken shrimp, salmon and combinations. These seem like an easy meal option for those who want a little variety and not much mess.
The sushi was my favorite of the day though, with the Chicken Teriyaki Roll being my favorite. Delicate chicken rolled with cuccumber sliced in long thin strands and avocado, drizzled with sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce made this a delicious choice. I also loved the asparagus roll, with beautifully green, healthy stalks rolled up with the luxurious texture of cream cheese. So good.
I also decided to try something I’ve never had before – The Egg Cake Sashimi. Egg Cake is basically an egg that is beaten and cooked in layers to create a spongy, airy texture.
Also delightful was the Japanese soda. I got the peach flavor though there are few good choices. What’s cool about these drinks is they are sold in a codd-necked bottle. The bottle is glass, and instead of a metal cap or a cork, it’s sealed with a glass marble that is held against a wax ring by the pressure of the drink’s carbonation. One the patron pushes the marble down from the ring, it’s caught by indentations in the bottle which cradle it and allows for the drink to flow around it.
Sakura Sushi of course has a nmber of sushi and sashimi options. Check out the Crystal Roll made with shirmp tempura with crabstick and cream cheese in soybean paper topped wiht eel sauce. Or the octopus roll. There’s even a Lyon Roll, made with shrimp tempura and cucumber and topped with tuna, avocado, and eel sauce.
