Multiple People Injured in Shooting at Rochester Hills Splash Pad

Rochester Hills, MI – A day of sunshine and play at the Brooklands Plaza Splash pad in Rochester Hills has been cut short by an active shooter who fired multiple rounds, injuring at least five people around 5pm on Saturday.
Neighboring Rochester Police posted information on Facebook, stating ” There was just an active shooter situation at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, 1585 E. Auburn in Rochester Hills. There are multiple people injured. This area is covered by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Rochester Hills Sub Station. They are in charge of the scene. An emergency alert went out to neighbors and shoppers in the area, urging them to shelter in place.
As of the time of publishing, it is not known if the suspect is in custody. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
UPDATE: 7:30pm Oakland County Sheriff’s Office released an update stating “We had an active shooter at the splash pad on Auburn in Rochester Hills. That is still an active crime scene and we potentially have the suspect contained nearby, but we asked for the moment people stay away from the area. We have numerous wounded victims. More to follow.”
UPDATE: 10:00pm – Sheriff Michael Bouchard gave a press conference, announcing that the shooter appeared to have pulled up at the park, exited a vehicle, and opened fire from about 20 feet away, reloading multiple times. He said there were potentially 28 shots fired, and nine or ten victims. Bouchard stated that the suspect is believed to be contained in a house about a half a mile away. Police recovered the 9mm gun used and the magazines. He added that one of the victims in an eight year old child. He said the shooting appeared to be random, with no known connection between the shooter and the victims.
UPDATE: 10:30pm – The OCSO has released the following statement:
Eight people were injured in an afternoon shooting at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center was notified of an active shooter at the splash pad located at 1585 E. Auburn Road between John R and Dequindre Road. A deputy was on the scene within two minutes of the 911 call, which was received at 5:11 p.m. today.
“It is still an active scene, and we are throwing all our resources at this to figure out what happened and to bring the responsible to justice,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.
Bouchard said the gunman arrived at the splash pad, got out of his vehicle and opened fire with a Glock 9 mm handgun, possibly reloading the weapon twice. Detectives uncovered 28 shell casings at the scene. The gunman had no known connection to the victims, the Sheriff said. The suspect is believed to be contained in a home in nearby Shelby Township. The Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to the home, and a search warrant is being obtained to enter the home.
The ages and sex of the victims is not immediately known although at least two of the victims were children. The victims were taken to four area hospitals. Earlier reports indicating more injuries have been revised after checking with area hospitals.”
UPDATE: 11pm – Mental health services from Oakland Community Health Network will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Rochester Hills Department of Public Services building, 511 E. Auburn Road, for victims, their families, and individuals who were at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills at the time of the shooting Saturday evening. No appointment is necessary.
