OC Restaurant Quest: Cotton Cake Japanese Cheesecake in Troy
(Crystal A. Proxmire, June 13, 2024)
Troy, MI – Japanese Cheesecake, also known as Cotton Cake, is a delicacy that rather different than the traditional New York style cheesecake that Americans are more familiar with. It has a lighter, fluffier consistency with less sugar, less cream cheese, and more egg. This gives a texture more like a sponge cake than the thick and creamy American counterpart. It also has a more subtle kind of sweetness to it.
Those wanting to try out this palate-pleasing phenomenon, Cotton Cake Japanese Cheesecake can provide a great introduction. There is a case full of different choices that changes daily.
I wanted to share a mix of options, so I spread out a trio of visits.
First I had the Almond Cotton Cake, with a fluffy sweet layer of cake, and another layer of fluffy almond cream, topped with some almond slivers. The flavor was spot on with this creation. I also had a peach smoothie, which was delightful as well.
The second visit I had the Forrest Berries version, made in a crumbly crust and topped with powdered sugar-covered fruits. The crust made it a more hearty choice, closer to a pie.
And lastly I enjoyed the Brownie Cotton Cake, with a chocolate flavor that was mild and on the darker, less sweet, side. It was made with layers of mousse and had chocolate chips on top.
That day they also had spinach and feta pastries, so I had one. I liked that they had a savory option, though it’s not available all the time.
Cotton Cake also offers coffee and hot chocolate, plus there is water available for no cost in the dining room. The space is a great place to enjoy your treat, chat with friends, or get work done online. It’s a corner location with plenty of windows, but also plenty of shade. And the artwork choices are great for the space.
