OC Restaurant Quest: TJ’s Express in Highland

Highland, MI – The quest to try every restaurant in Oakland County continues with a visit to TJ’s Express in Highland Township. This fast and affordable Chinese staple hit the spot for a filling lunch.
I was very impressed with the chicken teriyaki. Chicken teriyaki is one of my go-to items at the Chinese place close to my house and I’ve never had anywhere that lived up to it, until now. The chicken was so thick and juicy, and the flavoring was out of this world good in my opinion. Plus there were so many skewers of it in an order I had plenty for later. Once I try all the spots in Highland, TJ’s will be one of my repeats because of how good this was.
I also ordered beef fried rice. I loved it, although it didn’t taste like any other fried rice I’ve had. This rice was very buttery tasting. Like melt in your mouth buttery flavor, which definitely made my mouth happy, but also didn’t have the seasonings or veggies that one might expect. The meat was similarly buttery and good. The pieces were small which made it easy to eat, but there wasn’t much of it in there. This makes sense given the price point, which I thought was surprisingly low. For the low cost that it had, it was impressive.
My meal came with fortune cookies. One said “You are soon going to change your present line of work.” I hope that one is not true because I love being a reporter, and getting to do food reviews like this. My second cookie had only half a fortune, which is definitely amusing. I’d love to know if another TJ’s customer got the other half.
TJ’s has a menu full of Chinese classics, including steamed dumplings, egg rolls, moo shu pork, selections of pad Thai, and chef’s specialties like treasure of the sea, pineapple chicken, and Kung Pao double delight. They even have family-sized dinners to make meals easy.
