Daisy Project Adds Mobi-Mat to Orion Township’s Camp Agawam, Making Beach More Accessible

Orion Township, MI – A day at the beach is a joy of summer that not everyone has. But thanks to The Daisy Project – Michigan, those in wheelchairs can now join in the fun at Camp Agawam in Orion Township.
Headed by Daisy Project’s Amy Sylvester, the Tender Turtle 5K raised money for a Mobi-Mat, which leads those with wheelchairs or other mobility devices from paved path, into water.
The mat is lightweight but durable, and can be rolled up and stored easily. And it’s made from recycled materials. It’s also ADA compliant. The pathway fits in with the mission of The Daisy Project. According to their website, “The Daisy Project-MI believes that Fun is Universal, Inclusion is Expected and to Be Kind and Rock On! We are passionate about making fully accessible recreational spaces in our communities. We want our loved ones with special needs to play and experience everything our neighborhoods have to offer with their families and friends. We are committed to enriching the lives of families and individuals with special needs any way we can, including assisting with medical equipment, advocacy, and inclusion for all.”
The mat also fits in with the spirit of inclusion and accessibility that is demonstrated in the township.
According to Supervisor Chris Barnett, “In Orion Township, prioritizing inclusive design is a key focus in all new projects. Friendship Park boasts two major accessibility features, the Let Us Play playground, where every aspect is fully accessible and the inclusive Miracle Field, a baseball field designed specifically for individuals with diverse abilities. We also have two restrooms that feature adult changing stations. Each park in the township is thoughtfully designed to prioritize ADA Accessibility. At Wildwood Amphitheater, there is a paved pathway that allows wheelchair users to easily access the entire facility. At Civic Center Park, the new Patch’s Playground was just installed with the sand toys close to sidewalks so everyone can use them.” The new feature at Camp Agawam is also part of that commitment.
