Pontiac Man Charged in Huron Plaza Shooting
Pontiac, MI – A Pontiac man was arraigned on felony charges today in the May 31 shooting of two men in the Huron Plaza in Pontiac.
Demarkius Travonia Jones, 28, is charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felony firearm, and one count of firearms – possession by a prohibited person. 50th District Court Judge Ronda Gross ordered Jones held without bond.
“I applaud the great work of our team to not only quickly track down and apprehend the perpetrator, but to put together a case so he may be held fully accountable,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “Clearly, having just been paroled a few months back for a violent crime, he needs to be off the streets.”
The incident that led to the arrest happened approximately 10:52 p.m. on May 31. Deputies were dispatched to the plaza at 704 W. Huron on the report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they observed that the front of the business had numerous bullet holes in the front façade and a white Dodge Durango with similar holes parked near the location of the alleged shooting.
Inside the business, they found a man holding an AR-style rifle. Deputies ordered the man to drop the weapon, which he did. The man, a 23-year-old Pontiac resident, had suffered what appeared to be a minor gunshot wound to his back.
Deputies found a second man, also 23 and from Pontiac, lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Both men were taken to the hospital, where one was released later that evening and the other remains hospitalized.
Detectives were able to identify a vehicle in the area of Perry and Beach believed to have been driven by the shooter, later identified as Jones. He was arrested a short time later by members of the Sheriff’s Office Directed Patrol Unit (D.P.U.). Detectives found additional evidence on the vehicle linking Jones to the shootings. A return court date for Jones has not yet been set.
