Ferndale Library Kicks Off Summer Reading with Party on June 8
(FADL, June 1, 2024)
Ferndale, MI – The Ferndale Area District Library is challenging you to read MORE this summer! On June 8, between 12 pm and 4 pm, all ages are invited to the Ferndale Library for a fun Summer Reading Kickoff Party, complete with crafts, games, activities, and treats, as the creative library staff launch their new seasonal series of educational programs and cultural events while also encouraging everyone in the community to sign up for their fun reading challenge! Reading can always be an adventure, and that adventure begins at your library! Plus, prizes could be in store for those who take on the challenge!
FADL’s kickoff party, which is sponsored in part by the Friends of the Ferndale Library, features fun activities, crafts, and lawn games for kids. It will also have something beloved by all age groups: ice cream. Anyone who signs up for their Summer Reading Challenge will receive complimentary ice cream from Treat Dreams–included on the menu will also be the recently debuted library-themed ice cream, “Goodnight Blue Moon.” But, if ice cream’s not your thing, we’ll have chai tea and iced coffee from Meillie Coffee, ready to serve for any adults who might need an afternoon pick-me-up.
Anyone visiting the library on the afternoon of June 8 should anticipate a bit of a Summer Reading Takeover! You can sign up for the reading challenge anytime between 12 pm – 4 pm, but there are also fun activities planned, including face-painting from 1 pm – 3 pm & ballon-twisting activities at 2:30 pm.
This year’s Summer Reading theme is Adventure Begins At Your Library and we like to think that a sense of “adventure” can be experienced in a variety of ways when one visits the Ferndale Library, either from directly being here and encountering anything from live music to fine art on the walls, or perhaps through one of the items that you can check out with your library card, like a telescope or a travel guide.
PLUS: FADL’s Summer Reading Challenge is perfect for any adult who’s found themself saying, “…ya know, I really should read more!” Well, here’s your chance! But Summer Reading can also be an effective way for kids and teens of all grade levels to continue reading during their summer breaks, helping to keep their brains sharp and better prepare them for returning to class in the fall. Plus, anyone who takes the Summer Reading Challenge can stick to their own reading preferences, be it print books, fiction, nonfiction, or especially graphic novels and audiobooks, all of it counts and can be logged in Beanstack!
Participants who take the Summer Reading Challenge will use Beanstack, a web and mobile app that lets individuals and families track their recreational reading, either by time increments or by each completed book. Beanstack is also a great way to help every participant feel engaged and motivated to read throughout the summer. But you can still participate without using the app; paper logs are available upon request!
