OC Restaurant Quest: Paris Banh Mi in Troy
(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 23, 2024)
Troy, MI – The Banh Mi sandwich comes from a mix of cultures, from when Vietnam was part of French Indochina. The signature dish is a French baguette filled with Vietnamese veggies and meats. Paris Manh Mi is a chain with authentic roots, founded by Hien Tran who grew up in Paris, France, and Doan Nguyen who owned a chain of bakery shops in Saigon, Vietnam. While it is a chain, the location in Troy is the only one in Michigan, and it’s gaining popularity.
For my visit, I ordered the Shredded Chicken Banh Mi, made with shredded chicken, jalapenos, pepper, mayonnaise, cucumber, pickled daikon, carrot, cilantro, cucumber, and pate. The bread was so soft and the fillings were rich with flavor. If I ordered it again, the only thing I would do differently is order extra pate because the way that soaked into the bread was just divine. Other sandwich options include grilled pork patties, pate jambon, pork bbq, and vegetarian. For those not fond of baguettes, each can also be made on another French favorite – croissants.
I also ordered a rice bowl, which comes with the same delicious items in the sandwich except with a hearty amount of rice and a side of an orange sauce that, like the pate on the Banh Mi, I regret not ordering more of. This bowl was enough for me to have three meals.
The beverage selection at Paris Banh Mi is ripe with delicious choices. I picked the Paris Fruits Tea, as I was drawn in by the rainbow of sliced fruit in the middle. Other drinks include peach black tea, jasmine green tea, genmaicha tea, lychee tea, a selection of coffees and slushes like the mango, passion fruit, taro, and yogurt varieties.
If you venture into their cafe, there is also a display case full of baked goods, and even more menu offerings than online, including Korean corn dogs. The bright atmosphere makes it a great place to dine in, and it’s easy to order carryout online. They’re located at 268 John R, which is the strip mall that also has TJ Maxx, Michael’s, and Planet Fitness, but it’s in the space around the corner, facing the 14 Mile side, and there is an entrance off 14 Mile. It’s worth finding. Check out more at https://parisbanhmi.com
