Orion Township, MI – The excitement over GM’s investment in the Orion Assembly plant continues as Orion Township administration took ownership of their first Chevy Silverado EV truck this week.
Orion Township Supervisor Chris Barnett picked up the white pick up at Wally Edgar Chevrolet, and spoke to Joe Johnson of Orion ONTV about the purchase.
“The amazing news for our residents is we pay $0 for this beautiful $77,000 truck because we were able to find a grant through the federal government, an energy efficiency grant, that we met the criteria for thanks to Ashley Coyle and Sam Timko in our office, so we’re getting this beautiful vehicle that will be a fleet vehicle for our employees to use,” Supervisor Barnett said.
The truck was built in Hamtramck. The Orion Assembly plant is in the process of being set up to produce them, with the first ones expected to roll off the line in late 2025.
Justin Edgar, of Wally Edgar Chevorlet, shared that the vehicle will go 385 miles at full charge. “It’s gonna beat out the competition for sure.”
Barnett touted the energy efficiency, and cost benefits, stating “To not have to do oil changes and fill up at the pump, the $5,000 or $8,000 cost up front for these vehicles will be easily realized in savings over the years.” Plus, he added, “The other thing is just supporting what’s happening here. We will be a Chevy Silverado fleet as long as I am here. That’s what they’re going to be building across the street. So we put our money where our mouth is.”
Orion Township installed EV charging stations at the municipal complex, and Wally Edgar Chevorlet has some as well. “It’s only a matter of time before we have the infrastructure to keep up with the demand,” Edgar said.
According to the Supervisor, the vehicle will be used across multiple departments as needed.
