OC Restaurant Quest: Hippies Pizza in Royal Oak

Royal Oak, MI – At Hippies Pizza in Royal Oak, you can create your own pizza. But why, when there are dozens of interesting specialty pies to choose from?
My choice was the Coney pizza, made with coney chili, mozzarella, sliced hot dogs, and chopped onions served with cheddar cheese sauce. I made it even snazzier with a sesame seed crust. The crust was firm enough to hold the toppings without being too messy, and the classic coney taste definitely hit the spot.
I also opted for a dessert pizza to showcase Hippies Pizza’s range. The Curious George was a testament to the shop’s creativity. This sweet pie came topped with mozzarella, goat cheese, bananas, marshmallow, and caramel. It’s dusted with powdered sugar, and there is chocolate fudge sauce on the side. While this is quite sweet, the goat cheese adds a bit of tang making this a unique item to try.
It would be futile to describe the range of pizza choices. But here are three of them.
One is the Lasagna Pizza made with palomino sauce, mozzarella, ricotta, ground beef, Italian sausage, onions, tomatoes, herbs and Parmesan.
Two is the Magic Mushroom made with Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, portobello mushrooms, white mushrooms, and onion.
And three is the Bangkok topped with sweet Asian chili sauce, mozzarella, chicken, broccoli, corn, carrots, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onions, a swirl of teriyaki and a drizzle of mayo. Other interesting choices include The Detroiter, The Cheech and Chong, The Garden of Eden, Hawaiian Punk and Mac Daddy and Cheese.
Another Hippies staple is the Scooby Snack. The website describes the process for this treat, stating “we start with a juicy sliced hot dog, covered with mouth watering toppings, wrap it in a tender pizza dough blanket, then bake to perfection.”
There are salads too.
