Teen Leads Cops on Chase in Royal Oak and Birmingham
(Royal Oak Police, April 23, 2024)
Birmingham, Royal Oak, MI – A 17-year-old Chesterfield resident is facing a felony charge after refusing to stop for Royal Oak Police late Saturday evening. On April 20, 2024, at approximately 7:35 p.m., an officer monitoring cruising activities on Woodward Avenue in the area of Thirteen Mile Road observed a white Chrysler 300 driving recklessly.
The officer activated his lights and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver disregarded the signal to pull over and fled away from the officer at a high rate of speed. After changing directions several times along Woodward Avenue, the vehicle crossed Fourteen Mile Road into Birmingham.
Near Lincoln Street, an officer from the Birmingham Police Department successfully deployed a tire deflation device, causing both passenger side tires to start deflating. Although two tires on the vehicle were flattened, the driver continued to try and elude officers through a residential neighborhood in Birmingham.
He fled back onto southbound Woodward Avenue where he was finally taken into custody near Normandy and Woodward.
A 19-year-old female passenger was released following the officers investigation and no injuries were reported.
The juvenile driver is charged with 3rd Degree Fleeing and Eluding Police, a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison and is being held at Oakland County Children’s Village.
