OC Restaurant Quest – Pie Sci in Detroit and Oak Park
(Crystal A. Proxmire, April 2, 2024)
Detroit, Oak Park, MI – Pie Sci Pizza, which got it’s start in Detroit, opened a carryout-only location on 9 Mile Road in Oak Park, with a menu full of pizza choices with creative toppings and interesting names.
For my inaugural visit I got the Mac to the Future Pizza, a creative homage to a famous fast food burger. Topped with garlic oil, mozzarella, ground beef, American cheese, white onion, lettuce, pickles, romaine with a Thousand Island drizzle and a sesame seed crust it definitely fits the name.
I also ordered Evil Bread, though I don’t really know how something so sweet could have such a name. This was fresh baked bread topped with cinnamon and a house made frosting for dipping or drizzling.
It’s hard to decide which of the other pizza choices to mention because there are so many that sound great, like Baby Got Barbeque, Freaks and Geeks, Taco’s Modern Life, and Fungus Amongus.
But I’ll mention The Pear Necessities because this also sounds fabulous. It’s made with garlic oil, mozzarella, spinach, pears, bacon, and feta with a honey drizzle.
The Jimmy Pesto has walnut basil pesto, mozzarella, red onion, mushroom, chicken and ranch drizzle.
And last, but not least, is the Weird Al Pastor topped with salsa verde, mozzarella, red onion, pineapple, al pastor pulled pork, cilantro, and lime.
On Sundays they even offer brunch pizza, including the Netflix and Chilaquiles and H to the Rizzo.
Some tough choices for sure.
Visitors are also welcome to create their own, with a plethora or toppings that include old favorites like pepperoni, peppers, ham, and mushrooms, plus some fancy choices like jackfruit, tofu bacon, walnut mock chorizo, radish slaw, artichokes and more.
There are gluten-free pizzas and options for vegetarian, dairy-free, and vegan pizzas, plus a monthly salad option. Pizza and other items do change seasonally.
It’s also worth noting that the Oak Park location features a bit of love from local artist Carey Gustafson of Glass Action whose stained glass pizza slice hangs in the window, and some big love from Lurk and Destroy who painted the eclectic mural on the side of the shop.
