Larceny Suspect Who Evaded Arrest Fatally Struck by Vehicle on M-59
(Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, March 15, 2024)
Rochester Hills, MI – A Florida woman was fatally injured today when she was struck by a vehicle on M-59 near South Livernois Road in Rochester Hills.
The woman, age 30 and a resident of Lauderhill, Fla., was struck by an eastbound vehicle shortly before 7:30 a.m. as she ran southbound across M-59 west of South Livernois Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, a 42-year-old resident of Macomb, did not stop at the crash scene but later turned himself in to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Rochester Hills substation. He is cooperating with investigators.
The driver told investigators he thought he had hit some debris in the road until he heard later that a woman had been struck and killed. Neither alcohol nor drug use by the driver appears to be a factor in the crash.
The woman was among a group involved in a series of larcenies from vehicles in the area who were under surveillance at the time by the Troy Special Investigations Unit.
When detectives moved in to arrest the suspects in a parking lot, two men fled from the vehicle they were in but were arrested after a short foot chase. While placing the two males into custody the third was able to flee undetected. That suspect was able to make her way onto M-59 where she was fatally struck.
Eastbound M-59 was closed for nearly five hours.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 248-858-4950.
