Royal Oak Seeks Volunteers for Boards and Commissions

Royal Oak, MI – The City of Royal Oak has openings on several boards and commissions. Serving on a board or commission is a great way to volunteer time and expertise to help the community flourish.
As of March 12, here are the groups that have openings:
Downtown Development Authority The Downtown Development Authority’s (DDA) mission is to promote economic growth and revitalization in Downtown Royal Oak. The DDA will accomplish this mission by:
Improving and maintaining a solid and user-friendly infrastructure
Marketing Downtown Royal Oak to consumers and businesses
Encouraging preservation of Royal Oak’s downtown
By fulfilling this mission, and DDA will enhance not only downtown, but the entire City of Royal Oak.
The City of Royal Oak Downtown Development Authority is under the supervision and control of a board consisting of the city manager and eight or 10 members as determined by the city commission. Members are appointed by the city manager, subject to approval by the city commission.
The authority meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
Fire Department Civil Service Commission The Civil Service Commission administers the Fire Department Merit System. The commission governs recruitment and promotional procedures and acts as a reviewing body for those discipline and discharge procedures not regulated by labor contracts.
One member is appointed by the mayor with commission approval, one member is selected by the members of the fire department, and the third member is selected by these two members. Members serve for a six-year term.
The Commission meets as required.
Human Rights Commission The human rights commission was adopted by the Royal Oak city commission on July 25, 2022. The purpose of the human rights commission shall be to advise the city commission and the city manager and assist with efforts to bring greater equity and inclusion of diverse groups within the city of Royal Oak.
There will be a total of nine members, with seven of those being voting members. The remaining two non-voting members are the student member and the staff ex-officio member. At least four voting members must be Royal Oak Residents, while the other three members are open to people with an interest in the community such as a business owner, non-resident property owner, or employee at a business in Royal Oak.
The student member’s appointment term is for 1-year to coincide with the start of the school year through the start of the next school year. Student members must be high school students and have permission from their parent/guardian to participate.
Library Board The Library Board is an administrative and policy setting body which is responsible for the selection of the library director and for the general administration of the library. The board also confirms the decisions of the director and approves all bills.
The board is comprised of nine members appointed by the mayor with commission approval for three-year terms.
The Board meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month.
Rehabilitation Board of Appeals The Rehabilitation Board of Appeals is comprised of seven citizen members, empowered to grant, or deny appeals from the eligibility requirements of the Housing Assistance Program or actions of the Administration of the Rehabilitation Board of Review. The decision of the Board of Appeals is final. Action to set aside guidelines and eligibility is based on demonstrated hardship.
The Rehabilitation Board of Appeals is comprised of seven citizen members. Board members are appointed by the commission to three-year terms.
The Board meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month.
Veterans Events Committee The Committee functions in an advisory capacity to the city commission on all matters concerning the City of Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade, Memorial Day Service, Veterans Day Service and any other events honoring veterans, active military service members, or first responders as the City Commission may desire.
The Committee is composed of ten members; the city manager or their designee as an ex-officio non-voting member and nine individuals appointed by the city commission. Of the nine individuals at least three shall be at-large residents of the City of Royal Oak. In filling the remaining positions, preference shall be given to representatives of community groups, who may or may not be Royal oak residents, involved in veterans events or services, including but not limited to the American Legion, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Royal Oak Historical Society, the Royal Oak Memorial Society, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Downtown Development Authority.
Members shall serve three-year terms.
