Think Spring Event Spreads Love of Gardening, Seeds of Friendship in Ferndale
(Dominic Scappaticci, March 11, 2024)
Ferndale, MI – Ferndale Garden Club welcomed gardeners of all ages and abilities to their annual Think Spring Community Seed Swap and Garden Expo on February 25th. The garden club co-hosted the event with the Ferndale Area District Library.
The event welcomed over 100 attendees, breaking all previous attendance records.
Think Spring began in 2018 as a way for local gardeners to share their extra seeds and more importantly as a way for gardeners to socialize in-person and share their knowledge.
Over the years the event grew to include community groups that provide important information such as monarch butterfly conservation provided by Michigan Monarch Project/Ferndale, growing pollinator gardens, and seed starting.
This year we welcomed the City of Ferndale Sustainability Commission who provided information on the planned natural landscapes program and Oakland County CISMA who provided information about invasive plants, such as burning bush, that displace important flora and fauna.
Many of the participating groups distributed free seeds, including the garden club. FGC passed out packets of zinnia seeds, which has become an annual community tradition.
Ferndale Garden Club was organized in 1931 by local garden enthusiasts. Our goal is to share the love of gardening in Ferndale and to advocate for the preservation of wild birds. This goal was adopted in 1931. FGC maintains a community garden for the respite and enjoyment of our community. The garden is located at Livernois and Oakridge. FGC has awarded an annual scholarship to a graduating Ferndale High student since 1998.
