Widespread Facebook Outages Reported
(Crystal A. Proxmire, March 5, 2024)
Oakland County, MI – Facebook is experiencing widespread technical difficulties Tuesday morning as users across the country have been experiencing errors, including being locked out of their accounts. Oakland County Times and publisher Crystal Proxmire have been impacted by this.
“This was no small isolated issue – reports from users all over the globe indicated they were unable to access their Facebook, Instagram, and Threads accounts for the duration of the outage,” said Ryan Meray, President of C! Tech Solutions. “Facebook has been fielding a number of problems with account access, and in the last month experienced two major issues. The first was a massive user account lockout that impacted tens of thousands of users. People were finding that their Facebook and Instagram accounts were being disabled by being linked to unauthorized Meta Oculus accounts. After several weeks and some amount of public pressure about the issue, they seem to have resolved that and given the majority of those users their accounts back.”
“The second, and more troubling issue, is that a Bug Bounty hunter identified a 0-click or 1-click exploit that was shown as a way to get into user accounts without their passwords or authorization. This may be the vector that caused many users to have their accounts compromised and stolen over the last year or so.”
Facebook did issue a statement about the outage, which has since been resolved, stating “We have recovered from an earlier outage impacting the ability to log in to our platforms. Services have now been restored. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.”
