Oak Park Library Starting Renovations, Will Close Temporarily in March
Oak Park, MI – Oak Park Public Library (OPPL) Director Kimberly Schaaf recently presented Oak Park City Council with the “Your Vision, Our Mission” re-design project, which will be completed in two phases over four months in spring 2024.
After over two years of listening to residents, collecting survey responses, and collaborating with the library board, library staff, and city administration, OPPL will make improvements to each department within the library. This project will see an all-new floor plan, which is responsive to resident feedback, and reflects the demonstrated needs of adults, teens, and families with young children who use the library to learn, work, and gather.
The project is 100% funded using existing library savings over several years.
Phase I of this project will begin Jan. 29, 2024. During this phase the library building will remain open, but library study rooms will be closed for construction. All technology services will be available during this phase.
When complete, residents will enjoy refreshed study rooms, with increased space in each, located in a newly created quiet study zone, away from the high-traffic areas of the library.
Phase II will begin on March 11, 2024, when the library will close for three weeks. During this closure, the new floor plan will be implemented and selected furniture will be added to each department.
Curbside service will be available on-site during regular business hours during this closure. Items may be put on hold online or by calling 248-691-7480 and can be picked up once notified by calling the library upon arrival. Library staff will also be available to answer information requests by phone (248-691-7480) and email (reference@oakparkmi.gov) during phase two during regular business hours.
The library is expected to fully re-open for service on Monday, April 1, with a community open house to celebrate the new layout scheduled for Sunday, April 7.
Located in the heart of Oak Park at the intersection of Coolidge Road and Oak Park Boulevard, Oak Park Public Library’s mission is to provide materials, services and information to the diverse community who call the city home, and to meet their lifelong educational, information, cultural and recreational needs.
