Oakland County Launches RainSmart Rebates for Improvements that Help w/Stormwater

(Oakland County, Jan. 10, 2024)

Oakland County, MI – Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash is proud to have begun accepting applications for RainSmart Rebates, the county’s first residential green stormwater infrastructure pilot program. This two-year initiative is geared towards homeowners in the George W. Kuhn Drain Drainage District, offering up to $2,000 for implementing sustainable stormwater practices such as tree planting, rain barrel installation, or creating a rain garden. The primary goals of the program include fostering awareness about stormwater management and promoting environmental stewardship.

“RainSmart Rebates embodies our commitment to sustainable urban development and community resilience,” said Commissioner Nash. “We aim to inspire residents to be a part of the solution and take an active role in their own backyard. Through the management of stormwater runoff at home, each resident plays a vital role in safeguarding the health of our waterways.”

Applicants will follow a step-by-step process to implement an approved project to be eligible for the one-time rebate. Here are the steps:

1. Apply for the program
2. Conduct site assessment to determine eligible project(s)
3. Receive confirmation of approved green stormwater infrastructure projects
4. Install stormwater project(s)
5. Request rebate

Residents interested in participating in RainSmart Rebates can find detailed information, see if they’re eligible and apply for the program at oakgov.com/rainsmart. While the program is designed to be a do-it-yourself project, property owners can hire a designer or contractor to complete stormwater projects. Hiring professional help does not increase the rebate values or total rebate ceiling.

The George W. Kuhn Drain serves all or part of the following communities: Berkley, Beverly Hills, Birmingham, Clawson, Ferndale, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods, Madison Heights, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Royal Oak Township, Southfield and Troy. Funding for RainSmart Rebates is made possible by the George W. Kuhn Drain Drainage District where Commissioner Nash, Oakland County Commissioner David Woodward and Oakland County Commissioner Gwen Markham serve as board members. Funds will be allocated over 2024 and 2025 on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are spent.

Future program funding will determine if RainSmart Rebates will be open to other communities in Oakland County.
