Oakland County Seeks Nominations for Black Excellence Award
(Oakland County, Jan. 5, 2024)
Oakland County, MI – The Oakland County Board of Commissioners is seeking nominations for its 2024 Black Excellence Award. In honor of Black History Month, Commissioners will be acknowledging an outstanding Black resident of Oakland County who has taken strides to improve the community, made notable achievements or is otherwise worthy of recognition. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, January 18, 2024.
“It is an honor to continue to celebrate outstanding Black residents of Oakland County for the third year in a row,” Commissioner Angela Powell (D-Pontiac) said. “We are thrilled to give these unsung heroes the recognition they deserve.”
The Board is accepting living nominees of all ages and backgrounds. They must be residents of Oakland County, and they can be well-established or unsung heroes. Individuals must be nominated by someone other than themselves.
“The rich tapestry of voices within Oakland County fills us with pride,” Commissioner Yolanda Smith Charles (D-Southfield) said. “Recognizing and celebrating the contributions of our residents, along with the enduring legacies they create, serves to fortify and enhance the fabric of our community.”
To nominate a Black Oakland County resident for the award, community members can complete the submission form at bit.ly/BOCBlckExcl24. Nominators are also encouraged to email supporting documentation (such as a CV/résumé, news article, link to a professional portfolio, etc.) to boc@oakgov.com with the nominee’s name in the subject line. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, January 18, 2024.
“Any contribution to improving the lives of others in Oakland County and our region is a mark of excellence,” Commissioner Linnie Taylor (D-Southfield) said. “All community members are welcome to nominate someone they see making a difference in our county, whether the impact is large or small.”
Those selected will be notified of the award on or around January 29. They will be invited to attend the full Board of Commissioners meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 29, where they will be publicly announced as the winner and receive their recognition.
