OC Restaurant Quest: Brunch at One-Eyed Betty’s in Downtown Ferndale
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Jan. 3, 2024)
Ferndale, MI – One of our longtime sponsors is One-Eyed Betty’s in Downtown Ferndale, and I’ve had several good meals at this creative restaurant. But this was my first visit for brunch, and it was impressive.
OEB only serves brunch on the weekends. It’s available for dining in or carryout. For this story I picked several items from the menu to give a try, including their carryout mimosa.
The omelet selection at OEB has a variety of unique combinations. Omelet Number 2 offers a delectable mix of fillings not normally in this traditional breakfast meal. This one is packed with french fries, gravy, succulently seasoned pork belly, cheese curds, and roasted green chilies. This comes with seasoned potatoes and a choice of bread, in this case a light and fluffy English Muffin. Omelet Number 4 is packed with healthy roasted veggies, accented by the earthy tastes of goat cheese and aruglula. For this one we had the white toast.
There are also sweet items on the One Eyed Betty’s menu, including the Pancakes A La King, topped with the magical combination said to be embraced by Elvis Pressley – an amazing peanut butter sauce, slices of fresh bannana, and the crispy fatty goodness of bacon.
Another popular breakfast item is the biscuits and gravy. This is an item that OEB definitely does right, with fresh made biscuits and a spicier style of sausage gravy to warm the belly and awaken the tastebuds.
All of the items were made with flavor and flair in mind. Pair that with a restaurant that is a feast for the eyes and fun for the heart, and it makes sense that One Eyed Betty’s is such a popular spot. A mural made with beer caps provides fascination, while a row of pinball machines gives welcome distraction while people wait. Towards the back there’s an area with an amazing living wall, full of lusciously green plants creating it’s own little corner of ambiance.
Other brunch menu choices include Mexican Hash with chorizo, black beans, roasted corn, pico, sour cream, salsa verde, and hashbrowns, and the Vegan Portabella Scramble. The Breakfast Crunchwrap Supreme is made with hash browns, scrambled egg, refried beans, cheese, bacon, pico, sour cream, and lettuce. For those less adventurous, there is the Boring Betty – a simple meal of two eggs (made your way), choice of breakfast meat, potatoes, and toast.
All week long One Eyed Betty’s serves up an equally fascinating menu of dinner options. For example, the Mikelly Bacon Poppin Grilled Cheese is made with a blend of cheeses, cream cheese, brie, jalapeno, and bacon on rustic Italian bread. There are fire roasted wings, carnival pretzels, wild mushroom ravioli, Thai peanut salad, Scottish salmon, chicken and sausage gumbo and much more.
One Eyed Betty’s is located at 175 W. Troy Street in Downtown Ferndale. Check them out online at https://www.oneeyedbettys.com/
