Driver Accused of Shooting at Woman Driving in Rochester Hills Charged with Attempted Murder
(OCSO, Dec 9, 2023)
Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Troy man who randomly shot at a vehicle being driven by a female nurse who was returning home from work early Saturday in Rochester Hills.
The suspect is identified as Cortez Ulysses Taylor, 29. He was arrested after a short foot chase by members of the Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team about 4:30 p.m. today as he was returning to his home near Rochester Road and South Boulevard. He was not armed when taken into custody. He did, however, vigorously fight with the deputies, and one of the detectives on the fugitive team received minor injuries.
Taylor is being housed in the Oakland County Jail. “I am proud of the tireless work our team put into this to ensure this dangerous individual was quickly arrested before anyone was killed,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.
The incident lasted for about 16 hours and unfolded shortly after midnight as the nurse, a 29- year-old Rochester resident, was returning home from work. Sheriff’s detectives believe the shooting was random as the gunman has no known connection to the victim.
Detectives recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting.
She was driving westbound on South Boulevard near John R when she encountered another motorist – later identified as Taylor – who was driving erratically. She kept her distance, believing the other driver may be impaired.
She ultimately tried to pass him and honked her horn at him. Taylor rolled down his window and fired a single shot, striking the side mirror of her Jeep Compass and shattering her window. She was not injured.
The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, helicopter, drones and K9s were all used in the search. The nurse was able to obtain the license plate number of Taylor’s vehicle, which led detectives to identify Taylor as the suspect.
