Northville Reopens Downtown Streets for Winter
(City of Northville, Nov. 12, 2023)
Nofthville, MI – The closed streets of Main, from Center to Hutton, and Center, from Main to Dunlap, were reopened to traffic on Nov. 1 and will remain open to vehicles until April.
Temporary new signs leading up to the traffic lights on Main and Center have been installed to alert drivers to the new traffic pattern. Wayne County Roads reset the traffic signals on Thursday morning so they are working as usual – with green, amber and red signals. The intersections at Center and Dunlap and Main and Hutton have also reopened and traffic signals there are working. Please use caution at all of these intersections until drivers and pedestrians get used to this new traffic pattern.
In late April 2024, the streets will close to vehicles for the spring, summer and early fall, as voted unanimously by City Council on April 3, 2023. At that time, the bollards will be in use to provide safety and create an elegant entrance for people to enjoy the closed streets in warm weather.
This is the first time the two downtown streets are open to traffic since mid-June 2020, when City Council approved a special event permit that created a special pedestrian zone on sections of Main and Center to help businesses survive and thrive during the novel coronavirus outbreak. During that time, restaurants and shops had to periodically limit the number of people that could be inside their establishments and outdoor dining became a go-to option for restaurants.
