Black Cat Beanery Combines Coffee Shop,Snacks, and Quality Time with Adoptable Cats
(Lilly Crossley, Nov. 8, 2023)
Lake Orion, MI – On Tuesday, October 24th, the Black Cat Beanery opened its doors for the very first time. Located at 1192 S. Lapeer Road inside the Orion Marketplace in Lake Orion, the BCB provides a place for rescued cats to live and thrive before finding a forever home.
Along with an hour-long session with the cats, the Black Cat Beanery offers coffee, soft drinks, and baked goods. Walk-ins are accepted, but it is recommended to book a spot online in order to secure the time you want. There are currently two options for booking, one called the Black Cat Pass, which is $15 and comes with a drink and bakery item of your choosing, and the other is the Black Cat Pass + BCB mug, which is $27.50 and comes with everything in the Black Cat Pass plus a coffee mug with the Black Cat Beanery logo on it. The cafe also sells other merchandise, such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, and water bottles.
“We’re allowed by the city to have up to 15 cats, so we’ll have about 14 to 15 cats at a time,” David Tank, BCB’s owner, says. All the cats are up for adoption, except for Jax, a black cat the cafe was named after. Jax is a permanent resident, making him a constant and calming presence for each and every cat that comes into the cafe.
Currently, all the cats that reside in the cafe come from Pawsitive Cause, a non-profit animal rescue in Holly. Pawsitive Cause will send cats that are fit for the type of environment BCB offers. “It’s a nice exchange because we’re taking some of their cats in, and when one of these cats needs medical attention, we send them back to Pawsitive Cause to get the care they need,” David explains.
The cat cafe takes care of the cats that reside there, giving them lots of food and water bowls, litter boxes, and numerous toys and structures for them to jump, sleep, and play on. The BCB has many precautions to make sure the cats don’t contract any diseases, such as making sure all guests take off their shoes before entering the cat room. The cafe also has a back room that only staff and cats can enter, the latter being able to go through small cat doors, giving the cats a break from the main room if they need it.
Anyone can donate to Black Cat Society, which is the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that takes care of all the needs of the cats at the cafe. They are not currently accepting volunteers, but they do hope to start soon. Those interested in volunteering can follow the cafe’s Instagram and Facebook pages to stay up to date with events and volunteer opportunities.
The Black Cat Beanery is a wonderful experience for both cats and people, and the opening of this cafe allows a great opportunity for many cats to find their forever home.
The BCB is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2-8 and on the weekend from 12-6. They are closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.
