OC Restaurant Quest: Pontiac Super Chief

Pontiac, MI – At the corner of Telegraph and Walton Blvd. is a coney place named after the city’s namesake – Pontiac Super Chief. This little green building has a surprising amount of seating, with sliding doors to a patio that can be opened in warmer weather.  It was a comfy place to get some writing done over an inexpensive breakfast of a ham and cheese omelette, with hash browns, toast, and jelly.  The crispy has browns went well with the salty, juicy bits of ham mixed right in with the eggs.

I wanted to give them a try for lunch as well.  So another day I got a carryout of a Slim Jim sandwich and chili cheese tater tots.  The Slim Jim is a ham and cheese sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a sesame seed hoagie – a comforting combination that hit the spot. The chili cheese tater tots were classic goodness as well.

Other menu items include burgers, pitas, soups, salads, and pitas. The famous footlong coney was praised in a WRIF list, with writer Cort Freeman claiming that Pontiac Super Chief’s footlong tops even the famous Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney island. “Pontiac Super Chief has hands down the greatest coney dog known to man,” he wrote.

I did not try that item, but after a description like that I may have to make a third visit.

And of course there is the breakfast menu, with coney classics you’d expect like meals with eggs a choice of ham, bacon, or sausage. They have biscuits and gravy, a selection of omelettes, and of course pancakes.

Just as the retro-styled building with Native American themes nods back to the diners of last century, Pontiac Super Chief does not have a website. But online ordering can be done online through Grubhub.
