Creatively Dressed Skeletons Welcome Visitors to Downtown Highland
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Oct. 21, 2023)
Highland, MI – Sometimes it’s the little things that help bring communities together, and even with a bare-bones budget the Highland Downtown Development Authority, along with groups and businesses, have added something special to the scenery this year – skeletons!
The life size plastic decorations were funded through a Main Street Oakland County place-making grant sponsored by Flagstar Bank. This is the first year for the Halloween-inspired fun, with skeletons donning various costumes and posed in interesting scenes.
For example, a pair of dapper-dressed skeletons can be seen dancing in front of Karen’s School of Dance at 1185 S Milford Rd. At Maher Feed and Pet Supply at 217 E. Livingston Road, a skeleton in uniform uses it’s bony phalanges to pet the cute little rib cage of a skeleton dog. And at Five Star Supply Ace Hardware at 1135 S. Milford Road, it’s a skeleton on a toilet that has visitors giggling, and remembering where they might go for plumbing supplies one day.
DDA Board Member and Design Committee Chairperson Cassie Blascyk wanted to bring the project to the community, and put in the work to secure the grant. Harmony Patterson, the DDA events and promotions coordinator, created the artwork for the project. And several DDA volunteers and committee members are working together to get the word out about the community’s new fad.
“The DDA offered skeletons to 10 businesses and 5 Governmental locations. Many other businesses and organizations have added to the event! We are excited to have the entire community involved in this program, it has been a great community building project,” Blascyk said.
