Commerce Township Receives $100,000 Grant for Bicentennial Park
(Oakland County Parks and Recreation, Sept. 9, 2023)
Commerce Township, MI – Commerce Township has been awarded $100,000 in Oakland County Parks (OCP) Community Grant funding for renovations to Bicentennial Park. The project will include installation of a trail connector to park pathways and access routes connecting features, as well as renovation of the tennis courts, basketball courts and parking lot.
“Commerce is home to beautiful natural resources,” Oakland County Commissioner Christine Long (R-Commerce Twp.) said. “These improvements will help connect paths and residents, especially as they enjoy the updated amenities this grant from OCP will help fund.”
“Bicentennial Park is a landmark and gathering place for those throughout the community, and I’m glad that the county’s park and recreation team is helping maintain this beloved resource,” Oakland County Commissioner Ajay Raman (D-Novi) said.
“On behalf of the Charter Township of Commerce and our residents I would like to thank the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission, along with the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, for the awarded grant in the amount of $100,000,” Commerce Township Supervisor Larry Gray said. “We are very grateful for the continued partnership we have with Oakland County Parks.”
Eleven Oakland County communities have been awarded a total of $608,166 through the 2023 Oakland County Parks Community Grant Program. These grants will assist local municipalities with planning, preliminary engineering/design and construction costs for community park improvement and trail projects.
OCP Director Chris Ward said the grants will fund projects that directly benefit residents through increased accessibility, added recreation opportunities and investment in local neighborhoods.
“Partnering with local governments across Oakland County to improve and expand recreation opportunities for residents is a high priority for us,” he said. “This grant program is a great way to leverage limited tax dollars to make a big difference in these communities.”
“Improving access to parks and trails is a great investment in the health and wellbeing of our residents and communities,” Parks Chairman Gary R. McGillivray said. “Oakland County Parks is pleased to collaborate with our local municipalities to make these projects a reality.”
Funding for the grants was made possible through support from the Oakland County Board of Commissioners and Oakland County voters, who approved an increased millage levy to support the Parks Commission. This initiative will be reviewed on an annual basis to determine grant funding availability and procedures.
