2023 Candidate Interview: Donnie Johnson for Ferndale City Council
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 2, 2023)
Ferndale, MI – Voters in Ferndale will have a chance to select a mayor and two city council members on the Nov. 7, 2023 ballot.
For Mayor the candidates are Sean Hurley and Raylon Leaks-May. The seat is open as current mayor Melanie Piana decided not to seek re-election. Leaks-May is a current councilperson.
For City Council there are two positions and three candidates: Donnie Johnson, Rolanda Kelley, and Dennis Whittie. These are both open seats as Leaks-May is running for Mayor instead of City Council, and Kat Bruner James chose not to seek re-election. Whittie previously served on City Council, by appointment, to fill a short-term vacancy.
The Mayoral position has a two year term, and the Council positions have four year terms.
Note: Candidates Raylon Leaks May, Donnie Johnson, and Dennis Whittie have sent emails to Oakland County Times disagreeing with Kelley’s remark that they and other candidates are running as a slate, and have pooled money.

Each year Oakland County Times gives candidates for any office an opportunity to do a video interview. Oakland County Times does not endorse any candidates. Advertising does not imply endorsement. All candidates are welcome to do an interview. Because we do not have a sponsor this year, there is a small production fee. We are looking for a sponsor for our 2024 interview series. Contact editor@oc115.com for more information on sponsorship or scheduling.
