Holly Area Communities Switch from SMART to WOTA, Expanding Transit Services

Groveland, Holly, and Rose Townships, MI – Transit services are expanding in NW Oakland County thanks to a decision by officials to switch from SMART transportation services to WOTA (Western Oakland Transportation Authority).
The change begins September 5, with increased service areas and more eligible riders.
Currently with the SMART service, rides were limited to seniors and individuals with disabilities. Now in addition to those groups, veterans and low income residents can also use the service.
Currently the SMART service limits riders to a ten mile radius, which does get folks to Fenton, some medical centers in Grand Blanc, and Clarkston. But with WOTA that will be expanded. Village Manager Jerry Walker explained that riders will be able to go north to Flint, and south to Novi, Farmington Hills, Pontiac, and Auburn Hills.
Hours will also be expanding. The current hours of 9am to 4pm will continue temporarily during the transition, but will increase to 7pm in the coming months. They are also adding on Saturday service. Rides must be scheduled ahead of time, which can be done at WOTA’s website.
Walker added that WOTA will have four transit vans in the Holly area, compared to SMART’s two.
The cost of rides will be $2 each way, regardless of the distance.
“Once the county millage passed, with so many residents now paying taxes for transit services, we felt it was time to step up what transit services are available in our part of the county,” Walker said. “Several other communities – like Keego Harbor, Sylvan Lake, and Walled Lake – have been working with WOTA and seeing good results.”
Switching the service has financial benefits as well. Walker explained that the cost of the service doesn’t increase, and that the Village will be saving money because they will no longer have to carry their own insurance. It will also cut down on staff time because rides will be scheduled through WOTA, not through the Village.
“I think this is a win win for everybody,” Walker said. Holly Village Council approved the change unanimously.
Service with WOTA begins Sept. 5, though rides are now being scheduled. WOTA is also hiring for several positions. For more information visit https://www.ridewota.org/
