Bike Lanes and Safety Path Part of Bagley and Golf Drive Projects in Pontiac

Pontiac, MI – Those in the Crystal Lake neighborhood at Bagley Street and Golf Drive are in for a year of construction that will repair the roads as well as adding bike lanes on both, and a safety path on Bagley Street. A public info meeting on the project was held at Pontiac City Hall Thursday, with Mayor Tim Greimel and members of the engineering and grants teams on hand to answer questions.
“These are two of the worst streets in the city,” said Mayor Greimel to about twenty residents who attended. He applauded the efforts of the grants team who helped secure state and federal funding for the project, which is expected to start this coming winter and last for about a year.
The work also coincides with water and sewer work being done by Oakland County Water Resources Department. That work will begin in the fall and will require the complete closure of Bagley Street. Golf Drive, which is a popular cut through between Woodward Avenue and Telegraph, is expected to remain open, but with only one lane of traffic that will be west-bound.
Other construction in the area includes Franklin Street, which is a resurfacing project that began this weekend and is expected to wrap up in November. Square Lake Road, which is maintained by MDOT, will also be under construction next summer.
Project Manager Brian Davies explained that Bagley will be closed from Orchard Lake to Golf Drive. The few residents with driveways on Bagley will have access, but others will need to use side streets in the adjacent neighborhood.
The intersection of Bagley and Golf Drive will not change apart from new traffic signals. A traffic study was conducted and determined that the current configuration, with a delayed green light for WB Golf Drive, is the safest. Davies said they considered putting in a roundabout, but did not have enough space to.
The light on Golf Drive by The Links at Crystal Lakes golf course will also be removed as part of the project.
Bike lanes will be added to both Golf Drive and Bagley Street.
The safety path on Bagley will be on the West side of the street, connecting with the Clinton River Trail and leading to South Blvd.
“A lot of the roadways in our city need attention,” the Mayor said. “And we are working on bringing as much grant money as we can into the community and getting these projects funded. Construction is tough for everybody, but this is a project that will make that neighborhood more accessible, and better for everyone.”
