Grant From Lowe’s to Help Renovate Ruth Peterson Senior Center in Pontiac
(City of Pontiac, July 11, 2023)
Pontiac, MI – The City of Pontiac announced that it is one of 100 community
projects to be completed this year as part of Lowe’s Hometowns Community Impact Projects.
This initiative will support facility renovations for the Ruth Peterson Senior Center in Pontiac.
The project is Lowe’s largest community impact program. Launched in 2022, Lowe’s
Hometowns is a five-year, $100 million commitment from Lowe’s to rebuild and revitalize
community spaces nationwide.
Pontiac will utilize these funds to renovate and provide commercial-grade cooking equipment
to the kitchen area at the Ruth Peterson Senior Center. Additional upgrades include new
refrigerators, food forming stations, ovens, stoves, salad bar station, and floor replacement.
The facility and the kitchen have been in disrepair for several months, so the upcoming
improvements will go a long way toward providing quality, nutritious foods for Pontiac’s elderly
residents.
“The City of Pontiac is extremely grateful for the support and partnership from organizations
like the Lowe’s Foundation. Their generous grant will allow us to improve the kitchen at the
Ruth Peterson Senior Center, which will help sustain quality food service for the elderly.” Said
Pontiac’s Deputy Mayor Khalfani Stephens. “This gift moves us one step closer to fulfilling our
goal of making Pontiac a community of first choice. As the Heart of Oakland County, we want to
ensure that our seniors have access to the amenities and resources they need to live healthy and
productive lives.
This center supports many local seniors who face severe income restraints. In addition, the
Ruth Peterson and Robert Bowens Senior Centers were among Pontiac’s primary operating
facilities during the recent pandemic. The centers were the city’s hub for community initiatives
such as “Meals on Wheels”, vaccine information, and food distribution in the area. Lowes
improvement project is a much-needed program that will fulfill Pontiac senior’s needs through
to its completion date of November 15, 2023.
“The Lowes Foundation’s contribution to Ruth Peterson Senior Center will dramatically improve
the quality of life for our senior citizens.” Said Senior Center Manager Deborah Findley. ” We’re
truly blessed to be included in such a impactful project. Our senior centers are actively involved
in the community and maintain a safe and healthy lifestyle for our elders, so an operating
kitchen is exactly what we need.”
Pontiac’s Ruth Peterson Center was among 94 communities across 41 states and Washington,
D.C. selected as a Lowe’s Hometowns project. The award will address needs specific to each
community, from housing and community centers to outdoor spaces and facilities for first
responders and veterans. Each project will receive a grant from Lowe’s to make physical
improvements that help local organizations continue to make meaningful impact in their
communities. At the core of this commitment is Lowe’s red vest associates, who share a passion
for giving back to their communities and provide support to every Lowe’s Hometowns project.
Now in the second year of the initiative, Lowe’s Hometowns invites nonprofits and community
members to share stories of projects in need. Lowe’s is partnering with the City of Pontiac, local
Lowe’s associates, construction pros, and impact partner Points of Light to complete this
project.
