Students Presented with Pleasant Ridge Woman’s Club Scholarships

Pleasant Ridge, MI – The Pleasant Ridge Woman’s Club (PRWC) recently presented scholarships to seven exceptional high school seniors at a special celebration Thursday, June 8. Included in the pictures are Ava Verkeyn, Andrew Levin, Ava May, Allison Contat, and Jenna Decker. Molly Hamilton, shown with her parents, was not able to attend as the date conflicted with her graduation ceremony. Lochlan Patterson and his family are pictured separately since he had to leave early for an important school sports event.
Ava May is the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Margaret Jane Makulski Scholarship. A resident of Pleasant Ridge and long-time member of the Woman’s Club, Jane was an outstanding educator, respected by her peers, students, and their parents. Ava was selected as representing the qualities Jane admired in her students.
The celebration included some works of encouragement to the students from Pleasant Ridge resident Roger Smith, himself a 1974 graduate of Ferndale High School. Smith spent most of his career as his alma mater’s band and orchestra director, then assistant principal, and principal until his retirement in 2017.
The PRWC scholarship opportunity is open annually to graduating seniors who live within the boundaries of the Ferndale School District, no matter where they attend school. Events sponsored by the Woman’s Club provide funding for the scholarships.
