OC Restaurant Quest: Pop’s Hani Shop in Royal Oak

Royal Oak, MI – Fans of National Coney Island may be familiar with their unique creation – the Hani sandwich. Well now there is a restaurant centered around this classic called Pop’s Hani Shop at 32538 Woodward Ave.
The Hani is a pita wrap of chicken breast (grilled or fried), Swiss and American cheese, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and Hani sauce. The sandwich was a creation of a cook named Hani, long ago, who made it for co-workers and then had it added to the menu. While National Coney Island has a large and varied menu, Pop’s Hani Shop keeps it simple with sandwich and burger choices, and counter service.
Other Hani choices include the Spicy Southwest (Lettuce, tomato, Pepperjack cheese, house made Chipolte Aioli), the Black Cherry BBQ (Brix soda black cherry BBQ sauce, sugar cured bacon, shredded Cheddar cheese, crispy onion straws, cole slaw), and the Bacon Avocado Ranch (Lettuce, tomato, sugar cured bacon, shredded Cheddar cheese, house made creamy avocado ranch). There are also burgers, gyros, soups, salads, and “hot diggity dogs.”
Sides include chili cheese fries, housemade cole slaw, broccoli kale slaw, fresh baked cookies and more. For sodapop there is Brix soda which is based in Grand Rapids.
For my visit I went for the classic, along with another fav – chili cheese fries. For a hint of healthiness I added a side of kale salad, which was creamy and delicious. However, I was also surprised with a nice warm chocolate chip cookie, which of course was also enjoyable.
The service was quick and friendly, and counter seating facing the windows made for a good view of the world buzzing by outside.
