Madison Heights Library Remodel Includes Youth Room, Creative Tech Space
(Jason Theodoroff, May 26, 2023)
Madison Heights, MI – If you’ve driven past the the Madison Heights Public Library in the past several months you’d noticed that the library has been closed and that a lot of work was being done on the building. It finally re-opened on May 8 with a ribbon cutting ceremony that included Library staff and city officials.
Updates to the exhibit room, event room and the front desk will make the library as inviting and welcoming as possible.
The Creative Tech Space area of the library has a variety of maker stations, designed for a range of different skill sets and experience levels. Each type of equipment will be noted with the necessary skill level for use. Among the features is a 3-d printer.
The addition of the Robert J. Corbett Youth Room will provide an open space in the corner that will allow parents to read or play with toddlers and preschoolers when story time isn’t in session. Corbett served on City Council from 1992-2022, and was a strong advocate for services including the library. A statue of a boy reading bears his name.
Nearby the imaginative play area has learning toys suitable for older children. And The Friends of the Madison Heights Library now have space for a bookstore. Funds from book sales and other fundraisers help support programs at the library.
City Manager Melissa Marsh noted that funding for the library renovation was approximately $800,000. Manager Marsh wrote a federal Community Project Fund grant for $490,000 and the remainder was from fund balance which was available due to voter-approved Proposal MH. Construction at the municipal complex also includes expanding the City offices and City Hall. A larger grand opening will be held when the full project is completed. In the meantime guests can visit the library and enjoy all it has to offer.
