A Day Full of Flowers for Downtown Ferndale

Ferndale, MI – While he only gave the weather a “C-” grade, Western Market manager Steve Selvaggio was still excited for the first ever Spring Fever Flower Sale in Downtown Ferndale, saying it was a “B+” for a first year event.  “The people that are coming out are excited, they’ve buying plants, they’re buying flowers, and supporting local businesses,” he said.

Western was one of about a dozen vendors who gathered on W. Troy Street in the shade of the dot mixed use parking deck.  The plaza provided a cozy event space for the rows of tents that housed a variety of plants, artisan vendors, and food trucks on Saturday.  In spite of chilly weather, people came out and had fun looking at plants for inside and outside the home.

Selvaggio said the most popular plants were the herb and vegetable plants, which continue to be for sale at his store, which is located at 447 W. 9 Mile Road.

While Western Market has been part of the Downtown Ferndale community since 1983, they’ve seen many new businesses come into the community, making it more of a destination for lovely home decor items, art, houseplants, and nursery items.

At the corner of 9 and Woodward is The Rust Belt Market which features many vendors including two with thriving greenery – The Plant House and Lady Lazarus.  Proprietor of both, Tiffany Best, enjoyed a day outside of they normal venue, introducing people to her shops and selling bright healthy plants in interesting containers.  “This is a great way to let people out here know about what we have,” she said.

New to the Ferndale plant scene is The Terrarium, which is opening on June 3 at 22919 Woodward Avenue. The shop will feature a cozy space for visitors to enjoy an earthy atmosphere, as well as a variety of tropicals, annuals, perennials, and of course designer terrariums. There is even enough space to host events like weddings, showers, birthdays, and corporate events. “I love the Ferndale community,” said owner Brent Higuchi. “I go to local restaurants, local bar

s. I just love it, so when I had the opportunity to open a shop here – especially such a specialty, nice place, I just had to go for it.”

Other vendors included Blumz, Olive’s Bloombox, and Master Gardener Society of Oakland County.  The City of Ferndale was also on hand to share info about sustainability efforts like native landscaping and No Mow May.  Realtor Jim Shaffer and Associates also was one of the sponsors for the event.
