Dogs of Bloomfield Hills: A Look at Popular Breeds and Names
(Kurt Metzger, May 21, 2023)
Bloomfield Hills, MI – Next up in our Dogs of Oakland County series is Bloomfield Hills. Long known as one of the wealthiest communities in the state, the 2020 Census recorded a population of 4,460 residents occupying 1,596 households. Households averaged only 2.79 persons. The 1,085 registered dogs equate to one dog every 1.5 households. This is by far the highest share of any community I have looked at, and, a share that will probably stand highest when all communities are completed.
Like most of our communities, Retrievers are the favorite dogs in Bloomfield Hills, with the Labrador Retriever (168) and Golden Retriever (94) coming in 1st and 2nd, respectively. A distant 3rd place belongs to the “Mixed Breed” at 62 registrations, followed by the Poodle at 50 (though there were an additional 5 standard poodles and 3 toy poodles) and the German Shepherd with 40.
Among the Top 10 most frequent names, eight are traditionally female, while the other two – Bailey and Charlie – could go either way. While no name was a clear winner, Bella, Daisy (spelled several ways) and Maggie took the top spots.
The unique nature of names is illustrated by the fact that 611 dogs (56 percent) walk around with names shared with no one in town. My favorites are Bobby McGee, Frosty, Huckleberry, Karloff, Mistletoe, Mr. Fluffypants, Ruthless and Pompom Cuddle Love.
Oakland County requires dogs to be licensed. Residents can do so through Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center.
