Dogs of Sylvan Lake: A Look at Popular Breeds and Names

Sylvan Lake, MI – Sylvan Lake is a small city with room in the hearts of residents for their furry friends. That’s our next stop in the Dogs of Oakland County series. We looked at data from Oakland County dog licensing to tell us the most popular names and breeds.
The 2020 Census recorded a population of only 1,723 residents occupying 867 households. Households averaged only 1.99 persons. The 186 registered dogs equate to one dog per 4.7 households.
Like many nearby cities, Retrievers are the favorite dogs in Sylvan Lake, with the Labrador Retriever (18) and Golden Retriever (12) coming in 1st and 2nd, respectively.
Another breed with ‘Gold’ in its name – the Goldendoodle – tied for second place.
Only one other “breed” numbered in double digits – the Chihuahua (10).
Sylvan Lake residents had little agreement on names, as number one – Charlie – only appears 4 times. The seven names that tied for second, with three mentions each, showed some uniqueness with Bandit, Milly and Molly. The unique nature of names is illustrated by the fact that 156 dogs (18 percent) have received unique names, shared with no one in town. My favorites are Big Daddy, Gershwin, Mission, Pretzel and Ziggy Stardust Kirsbaum.
Oakland County requires dogs to be licensed. Residents can do so through Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center.
