Juneteenth National Freedom Day commemorates the date of the final emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. The official emancipation took place on June 19, 1865, following an announcement by Union Army General Gordon Granger in Texas.
While slavery had been outlawed by President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, actual emancipation was delayed in many parts of the South, especially in rural areas.
Refreshments are free and are donated by Jet’s Pizza West Bloomfield, Busch’s Fresh Food Market West Bloomfield, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, and Costco.
West Bloomfield High School is located at 4925 Orchard Lake Rd, West Bloomfield Township, MI, 48323. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held inside West Bloomfield High School.
