Several Bus Stops in Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge to Close During Woodward Moves Construction
(City of Ferndale, May 6, 2023)
Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, MI – Several bus stops along Woodward Avenue in Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge will be closed starting May 8 (weather permitting) through the completion of the Woodward Moves construction project this fall. Woodward Moves, a road construction project lead by the Michigan Department of Transportation in partnership with the Cities of Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge, began late last year and is now transitioning into a new phase of construction.
Earlier this year, the project focused on pavement and curb repairs in the left two lanes in both directions of Woodward. Now, entering the latest project phase, construction will focus on road and curb repairs in the right lanes of Woodward in both directions. One of the effects of right lane repairs will be the closure of several bus stops along Woodward Avenue. While bus routes will not be altered, several routes may experience delays and several stops along both Northbound and Southbound Woodward Avenue will be closed during construction. Affected bus stops will reopen following construction’s completion.
Bus stops in Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge that will be closed starting May 8, 2023 include:
- Southbound Woodward Avenue: Millington, Elm Park, Cambridge, Oakridge, West Maplehurst, West Cambourne, Albany, Cemetery, Fielding and 8 Mile Road.
- Northbound Woodward Avenue: Webster, Silman, College, Ardmore, East Cambourne and East Maplehurst.
Bus routes 405, 450, 460, 461, 462, 494 and 740 may experience possible delays due to construction and closures.
“Unfortunately, with construction often comes inconveniences and disruption,” says Lena Stevens, Ferndale DDA Executive Director. “Woodward Moves is designed to make Woodward and its surrounding public spaces safe and accessible to all people, regardless of their abilities or circumstances. With the completion of this project, we are confident that we’ll be able to provide equal opportunities for more people to enjoy Ferndale. We appreciate travelers’ patience and understanding as we work towards that vision.”
SMART Bus is working to notify riders of these closures by updating their website and apps, pushing updates to Google Maps and other transit map applications and sharing route notices to social media. Signage will be posted at designated stops notifying travelers that the stop is closed.
SMART Bus and the City of Ferndale are dedicated to making these closures as minimally disruptive as possible as well as supporting individuals with limited transportation access while stops are closed. There are several alternative transportation options for people who need additional support, including:
- The Ride SMART Community Transportation Program offers community transportation for seniors, people with disabilities or individuals with limited transportation access within a 5-mile radius of Ferndale. Learn more here.
- SMART Bus ADA Service is an advanced reservation, curb-to-curb service that is provided for people who are unable to use SMART’s Fixed Route bus service because of a disability. Learn more here.
- SMART Bus Connector is an advance reservation, curb-to-curb, service operated by SMART. When using Connector, you may travel anywhere within a 10-mile radius of a designated service area. Learn more here.
The Woodward Moves road construction project is in its second and final phase. The project is expected to be completed in the fall of this year. In addition to resurfacing Woodward Avenue from 8 Mile Road to Oakridge Street, Woodward Moves will remove a travel lane on each side of Woodward and dedicate that space to individuals traveling without vehicles.
