OC Restaurant Quest – Bakehouse 46 in Birmingham, Ferndale, Rochester and More

Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Plymouth, Rochester, Grosse Pointe, and Ferndale, MI – Blake Farms, based in Armada, started in 1946. That date is the inspiration behind the name of Bakehouse 46, which is the name of their small chain of bakeries centered on cupcakes, cider and donuts.
The shops are mainly in locations that were once Cupcake Stations, and the recipes from Cupcake Station remain. Ferndale’s location opened last week, and I stopped in to try some of the items.
My cupcake of choice was the Banana Pudding, which is made with banana cake filled with fluffy whipped vanilla pudding, topped with banana buttercream frosting and vanilla wafer pieces.
Varieties change often, but others include the Bump-A-Licious made with dark chocolate cake and buttercream bumps topped with dark chocolate and a white chocolate drizzle, and the Station’s Samoa which is made with vanilla bean cake, filled and frosted with buttercream, rolled in toasted coconut and drizzled with caramel and dark chocolate, and the Strawberry Lemon Drop made with strawberry cake with lemon filling, topped with strawberry lemon buttercream and a star drop of lemon on top.
The cider and cinnamon sugar donut were from Blake’s. In addition to the regular donuts, there are donuts with a variety of gourmet toppings.
Bakehouse 46 also has bagel sandwiches. The BH BELT has bacon, tomatoes, egg, arugula, and scallion cream cheese. My bagel of choice for that was the everything bagel. Other sammie choices include The Veggie made with roasted red pepper, red onion, tomatoes, arugula and veggie cream cheese. There’s also the Bakehouse Beyond with Egg made with a Beyond Sausage patty, egg, cheese and cream cheese.
Also in the lengthy display case are cookies, brownies, caramel apples, bread pudding, and even cupcakes that are made for dogs. Cupcakes (even the doggie ones) come in regular size and mini versions. There are now seven locations. Find them all, and check out the latest creations, at https://www.bakehouse46.com/.
