Oakland County Restaurant Quest: The Fed in Downtown Clarkston
(Crystal A. Proxmire, April 5, 2023)
Clarkston, MI – The evening of my visit to The Fed in Clarkston, there was a $165 dry-aged tomahawk steak as a featured special. I did not order that, though I am still ridiculously curious of how luxurious that would be.
Thankfully, The Fed also has a number of high quality, creative menu options with a range of price points for more accessible deliciousness. They also have a warm and inviting atmosphere with beautiful decor, attentive staff, and a plaque by the door telling all kinds of people “you are welcome here.”
A friend and I went for St. Patrick’s Day, so they went with a traditional festive Guinness for the occasion. I had a lovely drink with a giant ice cube and a marigold in it called Flowers in Mexico. This was made with Illegal Mezcal, semana infused agave, rose water, orange and lavender bitters. (Don’t worry, the Mezcal was not actually illegal, that’s just the name).
For dinner I had the Jurgielwicz Duck Breast with parsnip puree, brussel slaw, smoked apple vin, and cherry chutney. It is always a delight when the meal comes out plated like fancy artwork, and I enjoyed the flavor combination of the tender, rich duck meat swirled with the brightly flavored produce accompanying it.
My friend had the Wild Mushroom Flatbread, topped with ricotta, mozzarella, caramelized onion, and green onion vinaigrette. They were kind enough to share, so I got to taste this meltingly good mix of cheeses cut with the earthy tones of the mushrooms and the little pops of onion flavor.
For desert they had the Warm Guinness Cake, with toasted marshmallow ice cream and pistachio honeycomb. They liked it. I also liked my dessert, which was the Caramel Overload Triffle, made with tahini custard, butterscotch, and blonde sesame brittle. Like everything else, this was a delight.
Other menu options include Spanish Octopus, Berkshire Pork Chop, Angeleno Kale Salad, Creekstone NY Strip, Burrata and Broccolini and more. The menu changes often.
The Fed is located in Downtown Clarkston at 15 S. Main Street. Check out the most up to date menu, and make reservations, at www.thefedcommunity.com.
