Man Accused of Assaulting and Carjacking a 74 Year Old Uber Driver in Birmingham

Birmingham, MI – On March 30, 2023, at approximately 11:35 p.m., Birmingham Police were dispatched to the area of N. Old Woodward Avenue and Hamilton Road after a call was received from a 74-year-old male who stated he was assaulted and his vehicle was stolen.
The victim, an Uber driver who lives in Troy, advised he was parked on Old Woodward, north of Hamilton when an unknown suspect, described as a black male, approximately 5’6″ tall and of medium build, opened the driver’s door and began assaulting him. The suspect was able to pull the driver from the vehicle, enter the driver’s seat and drive away northbound on Old Woodward in the victim’s vehicle. The victim reported no injuries as a result of the assault.
Upon making contact with the victim, officers learned he had a second phone in the stolen vehicle. Officers utilized the “find my phone” app and were able to track the stolen vehicle. Broadcasts were made to area departments and as the vehicle was northbound on Lahser approaching Square Lake Road, Bloomfield Township Police located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and lost control, striking a guardrail. Birmingham Officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody without incident with the assistance of Bloomfield Township and Bloomfield Hills police.
