OC Restaurant Quest – CJ Mahoney’s in Rochester Hills

Rochester Hills, MI – The quest to try every restaurant in Oakland County continues with a visit to CJ Mahoney’s in Rochester Hills. The sports bar has lots of seating, plenty of screens, chatty regulars, a friendly staff and some perfect tater tots.
I ordered The Bavarian, a sandwich listed on the menu as “a Mahoney legend on it’s own!” And indeed this was a delight. Nice thick slices of grilled ham and melted cheddar cheese topped with lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a pretzel bun that actually is twisted up like a pretzel darn well should be, with perfect crystals of salt on top. It was an impressive sandwich. It came on a metal try surrounded by those perfect tater tots and a pickle spear.
I had root beer, but of course there is a full bar with beer, wine, and mixed drinks.
Other sandwiches include the Roast Beef and Gouda, the Memphis Pulled Pork, and The Mahoney which is a fried chicken sandwich with cajon seasoning.
There are burgers too, including The Freight Train which is a 1 lb burger with three slices of American cheese, two fried eggs, bacon, grilled onions, lettuce, and tomatoes on a French bread roll.
The only thing more superfluous on the menu are the Hot Pepper Cheese Barnett Bites which are balls of pepperjack cheese coated with breading and deep fried, with ranch to dip them in. That’s a spicy treat named after the Mayor, Bryan Barnett. Fried green beans and bang bang shrimp tacos are also among the appetizer choices.
