OC Restaurant Quest: Jerry’s Coney Island in Waterford

Waterford, MI – In 1970 Eugene “Jerry” Mazza Jr opened the first Jerry’s Coney Island, which was located in Pontiac. Over the years Mazza has moved his restaurant to different locations in Pontiac and Waterford, choosing places where GM workers and city employees were among his best customers, and in 1986 he settled on the current location at 5744 Highland Road in Waterford.
His son Eugene now runs the runs the restaurant, and appears to be doing a great job with it. The food is great and it’s often packed with customers.
I went one morning for breakfast, and was quite impressed with my meal. I ordered the Mexican Omelet made with ground beef, cheddar cheese, onions, and tomato and topped with house-made chili that definitely stands out above other coney places where it just comes from a can. It was nice having hearty beans, real ground beef, and warm chili flavor.
The hash browns were made perfectly and I appreciated the option of orange marmalade jelly to go with my toast.
When I was there, apple pie was the special, so I had myself a slice of that too. This also had a homemade feel to it, with a thick doughy crust and layers of sliced apples baked sweet in the middle.
Other omelet choices include Broccoli Omelet, Veggie Omelet, Italian Sausage Omelet, and the Piggy Omelet made with ham, bacon, sausage, and American cheese. There are other classic breakfast items, like pancakes, waffles, steak and eggs, and oatmeal. Jerry’s also serves up lunch, with pitas and wraps, burgers, soups and salads and of course their coney dogs topped with chili, onions, and mustard with the ability to add cheese.
The restaurant itself looks small from the outside, but there is a row of nice-sized booths, plus counter seating. Parking is mostly around the back.
