March 29 – Holly Area Veterans Resource Center Hosting Luncheon for Vietnam Vets and Spouses
Holly, MI – March 29th is National Vietnam Veterans Day. The Holly Area Veterans Resource Center will hold a luncheon in their honor at the Holly American Legion Post 149 starting at noon. Veterans and spouses are invited to the event.
3.5 million Americans served in Vietnam from 1961 to 1975. 9 million plus served in the US Military totally throughout that time.
58,382 names are etched on the Black Granite of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D. C. These are the American Service people who gave their lives in defense of freedom.
Of The 3.5 million who served in Vietnam, this number includes the over 500,000 who served in the waters off Vietnam.
Americans came home from the war to a divided country and were treated poorly by their fellow citizens. Once the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall was dedicated in 1982 and the Vietnam Veterans of America came into existence, attitudes began to change.
Agent Orange, PTSD, and the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action were main issues. Vietnam and Era veterans fought on every political front to get the government to give the benefits they earned. Currently the number of POW/MIAs from Vietnam is 1581.
Our Luncheon will honor all who served during that time frame. As Commemorative Partners of the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Vietnam War, we will pin all those who have not been honored.
We also invite any veteran to help us celebrate this Day.
The Luncheon is free to all. There will be a short program which will include pinnings if we have anyone. This is the first time that the National Vietnam Veterans Day has been celebrated locally. Program will also include speakers from Vietnam Veterans of America Michigan State Council & Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.
The Holly Area Veterans Resource Center is located in the Karl Richter Center. We are a 501(c) 3 and we serve all veterans.
The Luncheon is being held at the Holly American Legion Post 149 located at 408 S. Saginaw St, on the corner of Sherman St. If you are going to attend, please contact Joe Mishler at 248-348-9960.
Please join us. To all Veterans. Welcome Home!
